Alex Wild finally does Dictyostelium justice with his photos. Dictyostelium is an amoeba-like creature that lives in the soil. When it starves, it joins together with thousands of other individuals into a slug-like Borg collective that crawls to the surface, where they make a ball of spores. Until now, most pictures of these creatures have been pretty cruddy. No more. (via Starving to be Social: The Odd Life of Dictyostelium Slime Molds | Compound Eye, Scientific American Blog Network)
